Air Loss (CFM): The Window Spec St. Pete Homeowners Never Hear About

Why Air-Loss Ratings Matter When Choosing New Windows

When you shop for windows, you’ll hear plenty about glass, frames, and impact ratings. But there’s one number that quietly drives your energy bill and how quiet your home feels, and almost no one brings it up: air loss, measured in CFM.

What Air Loss Actually Means

CFM (cubic feet per minute) measures how much air leaks through a window when it’s completely shut. Even a closed window isn’t perfectly sealed, and the difference between a tight window and a leaky one is bigger than most people imagine. Lower is better.

Window Air Loss CFM Florida

Here’s roughly where some of the windows we install land:

Window Approx. Air Loss (CFM)
Potomac (Vytex) 0.01
Simonton 0.15
Pella / CWS 0.28

That spread might look small, but in Florida’s climate it adds up every single day your AC is running, which is most of them.

Why It Matters So Much In Florida

A tighter window means less of your cooled air escaping, so your AC cycles less, your bills drop, and your home holds its temperature better. It also means less outside noise, a real benefit in dense Pinellas neighborhoods. Florida is also steadily moving toward CFM requirements in more of the state, so air tightness is becoming a code conversation, not just a comfort one.

The Glass-and-Gas Side of the Story

Tightness is only part of efficiency. A single-pane window lets roughly 76% of the sun’s heat pass straight through. Step up to a true thermal pane, 7/8″ or thicker, filled with argon gas and built with a LoĒ-366 coating, and you can cut that to around 20%. In a real room, that can mean the space running roughly 8 degrees cooler without touching the thermostat. (Argon is heavier than air, so it slows heat transfer, but it needs that thicker thermal pane to work.)

What to Ask Your Installer

Next time you get a quote, ask: “What’s the air-loss rating on this window, and is it a true argon-filled thermal pane?” A good installer will have the number ready.
